Urban Meyer's tradition of making all incoming freshmen wear a black stripe on their helmets is one reason why his teams have been so successful. In college football, the word "lose" is rarely associated with a positive outcome. But at the Ohio State University, a freshman's biggest win can be losing his black stripe. While he was head coach at Bowling Green, Meyer introduced the practice of having all members of the freshman class wear a thin, black stripe on their helmets. Lose your playbook, lose the ball, lose the game—these are all bad things. The symbolism was simple—freshmen had to do the right things before they earned the privilege of having their black striped removed.
